Observing and verifying that your foot pod is measuring correctly:

This routine will work for any footpod. I own a Stryd, so I use it as my example.

Typically, Stryd comes with pretty fantastic precision and accuracy out of the box (in my experience), but that’s not always the case. Many users see consistently short or long distances, so a calibration factor should be applied to your running watch to make Stryd’s distance estimates as accurate as possible.

There are a couple ways to determine an average calibration factor for your footpod:

1. Run at a local track – run 10+ laps in the same lane, preferably at different paces and record a new lap at the same line each time.

2. Using a survey wheel, measure out a path that is at least 800 meters, preferably on a flat, straight course. Similar to the track calibration, run the 800m course 5-10 times at different paces. For this calibration style, begin running before the starting mark of your course and press the lap button as you cross the line. Press the lap button again at the end of the course and then run another 10 meters before turning around and preparing for another lap. You’ll discard the short “turn around” laps when you analyze your lap distances.

Here are some data from a recent calibration session from October 2017. I was running at a local community college on a well-maintained track.

During the session, Stryd was recorded with a Polar M400 (bluetooth) and Garmin Fenix 3 (ant+) while running in the number 4 lane, which has a standard distance of 423 meters.

Results: My footpod measured about 0.88% short on the Fenix 3 and about 0.45% short on the M400. As a result, a calibration factor of 100.8 was applied to the Fenix 3 and the M400 calibration factor was left at 100.0. You can see the raw and corrected data below. Note that laps were taken at one side of the track with the M400 and at the opposite side of the track with the Fenix 3.
